He holds an Engineering B.S. cum laude from Deusto University and an Executive MBA from IESE Business School.

Amaia Zurutuza
CSO

Amaia Zurutuza obtained her PhD in Polymer Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (UK) in 2002. During her PhD she worked in the research of novel polymers for biomedical applications. After completing her PhD she did two post-doctoral fellowships working within two European projects in the field of molecularly imprinted polymers. At the beginning of 2004, she joined Controlled Therapeutics Scotland Ltd. (UK) where she was a Senior Polymer Scientist working in the R&D of new controlled drug delivery systems. Her research contribution in Controlled Therapeutics lead to the publication of 3 patents in novel biodegradable and biostable polymers for controlling drug delivery. In April 2010 she joined Graphenea as the Scientific Director.

Aiora Urien
CFO

Aiora Urien joined Graphenea in 2013. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of the Basque Country, as well as an Executive Programme in Financial Management from Deusto Business School with an expertise in Project Management. She has wide ranging experience in R&D financing. Prior to joining Graphenea, she gained experience in R&D finance consulting by advising industrial companies as well as working as a business strategic consultant.

ELIAS TORRES

Elías holds a Licenciature in Physics from the University Complutense (Spain), a Master in Nanotechnology and Advanced materials from Lund University (Spain-Sweden), and a PhD in Physics & Engineering from the University of Exeter (UK), where he researched in scalability and integration of graphene and 2D materials and devices into semiconductor workflows, working with light-emitting devices, sensors and wearable electronics. He received a Marie-Curie fellowship to continue his work with 2D materials within Graphenea, where he leads now the Foundry division.

Luigi Colombo
Scientific Advisor

Dr. Luigi Colombo is a retired Texas Instruments Fellow and Adjunct Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has developed and transferred to production infrared detector materials such as HgCdTe, traditional as well as high-k gate dielectrics (SiON and Hf-based gate dielectrics). He is also recognized for his pioneering work on graphene thin film process development by chemical vapor deposition. In addition, he an expert in silicon-based device integration. Luigi is an American Physical Society Fellow since 2014 and a Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Fellow since 2011.

Luis Hueso
Scientific Advisor

Luis Hueso received a PhD in Physics for the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in 2002. He moved to the University of Cambridge (UK) as a Marie Curie Fellow. In 2007, Luis Hueso obtained a permanent teaching and research position at the University of Leeds (UK). Since late 2008 he is an Ikerbasque Research Professor and leader of the Nanodevices group at CIC nanoGUNE. Luis Hueso has published more than 50 article along his research career, some of them is journals as prestigious as Nature, Nature Physics or Nature Materials.

Tomás Palacios
Scientific Advisor

Prof. Palacios studied Telecommunication Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and received his PhD from the University of California – Santa Barbara in 2006. He leads the Advanced Semiconductor Materials and Devices Group at the Microsystems Technology Laboratories of MIT. Prof. Palacios has been leading the development of new applications for graphene-based materials. In 2010, he founded the MIT Center for Graphene Devices and Systems, with the goal to coordinate the graphene work at MIT. He is also the co-founder of the IEEE MTT Nanotechnology Committee and the MTT Distinguished Microwave Lecturer on graphene nanotechnology.
